Affordable Exotic Car - Gas Mileage

July 2nd, 2008 . by getfrog

With today’s increase in Gas Prices, I can see how one would worry about the gas mileage of Affordable Exotic Cars. Yes, some do guzzle the gas but you would be surprised that some Exotic Cars get 19MPG (Miles Per Gallon) in the city and 28MPG (Miles Per Gallon) on the Highway! What does a typical 2000+ model Mini Van get for Fuel Economy? How about 20 Miles Per Gallon in the city and 28 Miles Per Gallon on the Highway. So you decide… Would you rather take a day trip in a Mini Van or in a Lotus Esprit Turbo?

So what are some facts and tips about better Gas mileage? Well, one of the best and easiest tricks is swapping out your air filter with a K&N replacement filter. I have seen up to 2 Miles Per Gallon increase on my digital gauge in my 2005 Mustang GT. these filters are only about $40.00 from your local Wal Mart and Auto Shop and eventually they pay for themselves because you never have to replace it. When it gets dirty, you just wash it, dry it off and drop it back in.

Another Tip for better Gas Mileage is to refrain from buying taller wheels. Yes, I know most folks love the “Bling Bling” factor of big chrome 20? wheels, but this changes the gear ratio of your drive train and requires more power and higher RPM’s to turn these big wheels in city driving and some highway driving. And what increases when using more power and higher RPM’s? You guessed it… more fuel is used with taller wheels. I recommend a 17? wheel with low profile tires. If you must go bigger, an 18? wheel is plenty. I kept my stock 17? wheels on my Mustang GT but recently replaced the tires, with a low profile tire but a little bit wider. It looks cooler than the tall stock tires and my gas mileage also increased, according to my gas mileage average readout! Another benefit about having shorter wheels, is your car will be faster at the drag strip. Shorter tires are awesome for racing when you have a stock drive train gear ratio. On my Viper, I have 17? wheels but the outer diameter of the actual lip is 18.5?, so that gives off the resemblance of larger wheels but staying with a 17?. Also, tires are cheaper for shorter wheels.

And by the way…. My 2005 Mustang GT stock gets this gas mileage:

2005 Mustang GT
17 (MPG) Miles Per Gallon - City
25 (MPG) Miles Per Gallon - Highway

But after my modifications for better fuel economy, these are my results!
21 (MPG) Miles Per Gallon - City
30 (MPG) Miles Per Gallon - Highway

So the tips I talked about above, netted me +4 Miles Per Gallon in the City and +5 Miles Per Gallon in the highway! This is a MUST with today’s gas Prices!
